 Chantex (varenicline
Tartrate) was approved on 11 May 2006
by the U.S Food and Drug Administration as the first new
prescription medication for smoking cessation in nearly a
decade, Its the latest addition to the anti-smoking
treatments available. Chantix is awaiting European marketing
authorization. Chentix was discovered and developed by
Pfizer, Inc. headquartered in New York. Chantix was
developed at Pfizer’s research facilities in Groton,
Connecticut.
The good news for a
smoker is that Chantix is the fourth new medicine by Pfizer to receive
FDA
approval this year.
Pfizer scientists researched a specific
molecule for smoking cessation that target the nicotine
receptor. Chantix was approved based on six clinical trials
involving more than 3,500 cigarette smokers. Chantix acts on
the brain in areas affected by smoking in two ways: by
providing some of the effects of nicotine to ease withdrawal
symptoms and by blocking the effects of nicotine if smoking
is resumed.
Chantex is available by prescription only and comes in blue
(1 mg) and white (.5 mg) tablet forms which are prescribed
consecutively during a twelve-week regimen. The approved
course of treatment with Chantix is twelve weeks with a
possible additional twelve-week regimen prescribed if the
patient quits smoking. The additional twelve-
week regimen is
to insure long-term success. The prescribed course of
treatment is to start taking Chantix seven days before
quitting smoking. Chantix should be taken after meals with a
glass of water. In clinical trials, the most common
side
effects were nausea, headache, vomiting, gas, insomnia,
abnormal dreams and problems with taste.
Chantrix
Smoking cessation
is now available in stores for sale with a prescription with
a cost of around $169. You can
